Editing

Critique: careful over costly.

Nowadays, you can get grammar advice and punctuation help from just about any plugin or text program. But no technology can help a story or its teller reach the next stage of their journey easily, and access to lauded professionals who offer that guidance can often be more costly than a first work may ever see in returns. Part of the reason we build our tools in Projects is to serve that middle ground. But even then, sometimes you need a helping hand or want a more personal touch.

For those who want something more than beta-reading or peer critique, we have a small, dedicated team of internal editors who treat each project as a collaboration with the author. We'll break out the red ink and apply the tough love to help a creator improve their story, and both can grow in the process. By recognizing what works and trimming what doesn't, a writer should have, at the end, something ready to stand on its own and resonate with readers.

Here's some of what we can do.

Developmental Auditing

For the in-progress work or the heavy revisionist. We'll go into detail with premise, world-building, plot and character arcs, action, dialogue, and pacing. We'll look for glaring wording issues, major struggles that can be bolstered, and parts that may need to be trimmed, with a focus on structural analysis.
Begins at $0.024 / word

Line-level Triage

Here we address the technical use of language and stylistic presentation. We'll nail the usual spelling, grammar, transitions, and consistency, but also hammer at word choice, tone, phrasing, idea communication, organization, and overall flow. We'll go through every line with a fine-toothed comb to make sure it says what you want it to say.
Begins at $0.019 / word

Pudding Proof

A focus on finishing touches. We'll hunt for typos, catch any lingering tiny errors, fix up grammar, flag any larger issues, and in general polish up your work nice and shiny and ready for production. If we see items that could use further revision, we'll leave notes, and also offer suggestions to improve word choices if anything stands out.
Begins at $0.01 / word

All services return a heavily annotated Word document with the track changes feature and margin comments, a summary of strengths and improvements, and a brief (30- to 60-minute) followup call for any additional questions or clarifications.

The Manuscript Discount
We offer an even more affordable option for those who have gone through the beta-reading process with Manuscript.Ink or through participation in our partnership communities. Prices for qualifying works begin at:
Develop: $0.018 / word
Line-level: $0.012 / word
Proof: $0.006 / word
